Installation of independent solar photovoltaic system in Ajderovac, Lika
The aim of the project is to provide electricity to families living in remote rural areas in a way that is cost-effective, environment-friendly and sustainable for the people. It has been done through a partnership with local NGO - Association Una, as a demonstration project of a photovoltaic (PV) system in an isolated settlement in hinterland region of Zadar County.
Before this 5 kW solar PV system was installed, the family lived with on average two hours of electricity per day, produced with a diesel aggregate and they needed to pay one quarter of their annual family income for fuel. Now, the family has electricity 24 hours a day (and the system can store enough electricity in batteries for several days with no sun thus with minimal production). The price of installation is three times less then would be the price of a conventional re-connection to the electricity grid, which was destroyed by the War.
Restored access to electricity for this family means having regular power supply for less money and from a free-of-charge renewable energy source, means more opportunities for economic activities on their family farm and means more income saved and available for investing into a more sustainable things then is fuel for diesel aggregate.
This "triple-win" example can be used in other remote areas of this or the other neighbouring counties and countries as a cheaper and quicker way to secure electricity for homes, which is often a hurdle in rebuilding lives, especially for returnee communities. Besides that UNDP secured the provision of a photovoltaic system, this project also enabled free vocational training for a member of Association Una from Srb as a Solar heating and photovoltaic system assembler. This person will be responsible for maintenance of the system and as the contact person in charge of organising study visits, which are a part of Zadar Solar Educational Centre activities.
The solar PV installation was co-financed with a private sector donation, the Energy Plus company from Ludbreg. This project is implemented in the framework of the Project "Support to underdeveloped areas in Croatia to prepare for the EU CAP and Rural Development Policy while reducing their vulnerability to climate change" financed by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the Project Goal: 3. "Created pre-conditions for further development of "green" rural businesses contributing to GHG emissions reduction, climate change adaptation and nature preservation and protection".
