    87 project ideas were presented for the less developed Croatian regions, which are eligible for financing from EU funds

    The Ministry of Regional Development and EU funds and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Croatia presented the main results of the project “Preparing grounds for the use of EU funds: creating a project database for the less developed areas of the Republic of Croatia.”, today in Zagreb. The project started in August 2013 and lasted 18 months.

    UNited against AIDS

    There are 1000 people with HIV in Croatia, of which 250 have AIDS, according to the latest data from the Croatian Public Health Institute introduced to mark World AIDS Day, December 1. With around 80 new cases of HIV infection per year, Croatia is still a country with a low prevalence of HIV/AIDS. The aim is to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis of the HIV infection to ensure successful treatment and to prevent further spread of the infection.

    A new project for more effective social protection

    Memorandum of Understanding between UNDP and the Vukovar –Srijem County

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Croatia and the Vukovar-Srijem County signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the cooperation in preparation and implementation of the disaster risk reduction projects and activities in Vukovar on October 31. The Memorandum is designed to establish principles for future cooperation in order to prevent disasters and new losses in the county, and further improve disaster prevention activities.

    Community development: Changing living conditions from below

    On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, marked on October 17, Roma settlement Kuršanec in Medjimurje County hosted educational workshop “Plans and goals for future” aimed at encouraging discussion within community about different forms of poverty and the ways in which individuals and society can overcome them. Workshop was led by Centre for social welfare Čakovec and young Roma and non-Roma living nearby were encouraged to talk about their future dreams and how to achieve them.

    Economic crisis threatens the implementation of human rights

    The Croatian Parliament hosted a round table discussion on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of human rights, which the United Nations introduced in 2006 as a mechanism to monitor the conditions of human rights in member states every four years. Participants discussed the human rights situation in Croatia, including recommendations from the UPR report, they also gained insight into the reporting process in front of the Human Rights Council.
