    One Billion Rising event held in Zagreb!

    On V-Day's 15th Anniversary, 14 February 2013, the ONE BILLION RISING initiative invited women and those who love them to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to the violence. In Zagreb, the dance protest was organised by the Zagreb Centre for Women's Studies, Centre for Victims of War, K-zona, Women's Room, Croatian Association of Persons with Disabilities and UN family in Croatia.

    Croatian parliament receives UN handbook on disabilities

    Croatian parliamentarians today received a helpful resource to assist in ensuring that legislation guarantees equal rights for people with disabilities. The Croatian Ombudswoman for People with Disabilities, Anka Slonjšak, presented UNDP funded Croatian version of publication Disabilities: A Handbook for Parliamentarians to the Parliamentary Committee for Health and Social Welfare.

    Helen Clark pledges UNDP support to victims of wartime sexual violence

    At the signing of the new USD 175,000 worth project to address the needs of victims of wartime rape and other sexual violence, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark reconfirmed the priority that UNDP puts on fighting violence against women. The project agreement was signed by UNDP Resident Representative in Croatia Louisa Vinton, Minister of War Veterans Predrag Fred Matić and the President of the Women in the Homeland War Association Marija Slišković, together with Swiss Ambassador Denis Knobel, as Switzerland is providing initial funding.

    UNDP head praises partnership with Zadar County

    At the signing ceremony for two new project agreements between Zadar County and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UN's highest-ranking development official vowed to support the County's efforts to realize its potential not just as a tourist destination but also as a centre for innovation. UNDP Administrator Helen Clark also visited Otočac on the town's annual day and received a medal for UNDP's long-term contribution promoting development in the Gacka River Valley.

    City of Glina and UNDP Assisting in Legalization of Agricultural Facilities

    Mayor of Glina, Milan Bakšić, signed the contract on co-financing of technical documentation required for the consolidation of farmers' establishments and their property with 37 farmers from the territory of Glina, on behalf of the City of Glina today. The farmers received the complete technical documentation for the facilities on their property – geodesic and architectural analysis of the situation, and they undertook the obligation to complete the legalization procedure within the timeframe required by the law.

    Disability as 'pathology' of society

    On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, which is being marked this year under the motto: Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all, the President of the Republic of Croatia, Ivo Josipović, convened a roundtable focusing on the discussion with representatives of the relevant ministries on problems that persons with disabilities are facing, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and in cooperation with the Office of the Ombudswoman for Persons With Disabilities.

    Victims' protection in criminal proceedings is one of the judicial reform priorities

    Victim and witness protection in criminal proceedings is the topic of the regional conference which is taking place on November 28-29 in Zagreb, organized by Ministry of justice and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Croatia. On this occasion the representatives of Ministries of justice from seven countries* of the Eastern Europe have signed a Joint Statement supporting the implementation of the new European Union directive for minimum standards of victims' rights, which was put into effect on November 14th, 2012. One of the prerequisites is to widen the access to pro bono services for victim and witness support in criminal proceedings.

    Croatia's Low Emission Development Strategy

    Two-months-series of sectorial workshops under the project „ Supporting Croatia`s transition to low-emission development" has come to an end. Over 200 stakeholders were actively involved in the workshop process. According to a survey undertaken at the end of the workshops for each sector, more than 90% of participants were satisfied with the outcome of the workshop legitimising the bottom-up approach to Low Emission Development Strategy (LEDS) consultation.

    On International Day, UN calls for an end to violence against women

    Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced that its "Living Life without Violence" campaign, organized together with the Croatian Ministry of Interior, would conclude with a performance of the play, Violence – There is No Excuse for Violence, at the Vidra Theater in Zagreb on 4 December 2012. The play, written and directed by Zijah Sokolović, the UNDP Goodwill Ambassador for Tolerance and Nonviolence, encourages teens to look critically at violence in everyday life.

    Vukovar's historic Grand Hotel reopens for a day

    As part of this year's commemorations of the fall of Vukovar in 1991, city residents were invited to a Community Open House at the Grand Hotel/Workers' Hall in the city center, where they were joined by President Ivo Josipović, Minister of War Veterans Predrag Matić Fred and Vukovar Mayor Željko Sabo. The Open House was organized by the European Union (EU) Delegation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to show the progress that has been made in the €1.6 million restoration of the exterior of this monumental "city palace" and to launch fund-raising for the future reconstruction of the interior.
