Benefit concert supports solar power at Kaštela school

TBF to star in event at Kaštel Stari on 17 January

ZAGREB, January 13th 2014 – As a part of a campaign to build a solar power plant for the Ostrog elementary school in Kaštel Lukšić, the Kaštela Energy Cooperative and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are organizing a “Solar Concert” to take place on 17 January 2014 at the sports centre in Kaštel Stari starting at 20.00. Performers at the benefit concert include the popular band The Beat Fleet (TBF) from Split along with local bands: Justin’s Johnson, Mjesni odbor, Ultimatum and Rokolomotiva. Tickets cost HRK 30 and will be available for purchase at the entrance before the start of the concert. 

Proceeds from the concert will support a project organized by UNDP and local partners to build a solar photovoltaic power system on the roof of the Ostrog school. The electricity generated by the system will make the school energy independent and also generate revenues that can be used to install energy-efficiency lighting and fund educational projects. A “crowdfunding” campaign aiming to raise the USD 10,000 needed for the project has been running on the Indiegogo platform since December and USD 4,000 has been raised so far.

The local community has shown strong support for this campaign along with the City of Kaštela. Corporate sponsors of the concert include Ribola d.o.o., Mediteran produkcija, Clissa d.o.o., Media plakat, Nautic Radio Kaštela, Portal Grada Kaštela, Bepo Sound and Plesni klub K7. Local support and involvement are fundamental to the project, whose broader aims are to educate school children about renewable energy and environmental protection and encourage the local community to work together to build a more sustainable future.

UNDP has committed to contribute USD 1.50 of its own funds for every dollar raised through the crowdfunding campaign, meaning that every dollar raised on Indiegogo will yield USD 2.50 for the Ostrog school’s new solar power system.
